Fotojet – Free Online Photo Editor

Most of my friends on social media were ardent fans of online editor Picasa. When Google decided to retire it, several of them had asked me for a suitable replacement online editor. Being a Lightroom addict, I always advised them to go for offline graphic editors. When someone from fotojet.com recently sent me a nice email inviting me to try their web app; I wanted to see how good are these online editors and how they can solve editing problems of online photo editor addicts.

fotojet.com is a flash based graphic editor with card design software as well as a collage maker, all built into one. On their home page, you get three options. Edit a Photo, Create a design or Make a Collage. If you click any one of these links the app will load, and the editor will open to that tab. It is a flash based editor, so if you have disabled flash, you may have to enable it. Even though it is called a free editor, there are parts of it which are unlocked only after subscribing to Fotojet. I will cover most of the free options in this review. You will be able to try out the effects of the paid options. The program will allow you to preview, but won’t be able to save, unless you paid for it.

Once you open the Edit section, you have the ability to open your image from either your computer or directly from Facebook just like a regular photo editing program. On the left side of the screen, there is a series of buttons separated into Basic and Advanced. The Basic section is free for all. The Advance section which has a crown sitting on top is a paid section. The arrangement of the menu is clear and concise, and apparently, they perform as they say. I was impressed as most of the Lightroom basic menu structure was replicated and implemented exactly as it is in the Lightroom. In the Basic menu, you can Crop, Resize, Rotate, and alter the exposure or colour tone of an image. In Advance menu, you can Sharpen, Dehaze, Vignette, and adjust the Noise and Focus.

You can add effects (which are akin to Lightroom presets) like B&W, Sepia, Vintage look, etc.

Adding text using various fonts and colours is also a breeze.

Adding clipart as an overlay is also very easy and several vectors drawings as well as clipart available for you to use it.

You can also lay designs like flowing light stream, sunburst, starburst, etc. as an overlay.

Lastly, finish off the file by creating a frame around the picture. Thus you can quickly transform a mediocre looking capture into jazzy looking one your friends will love in no time.

The design section is dedicated mostly to Social Media. There are invitation and poster section, but everything else is meant to create Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram header images. You can create ThankYou cards, greeting cards or birthday invites with several readymade templates.

Their collage section is made up of a series of seemingly beautiful templates useful for many different purposes. Everything from photo cards to the cover of Magazine. I created a “Wanted Poster” of myself. The user interface is very straightforward and easy to use. It is designed to be used by virtually anyone.

Even though I still prefer offline graphic programs like Lightroom & Photoshop, the quality of their templates look good. Once you’ve created a piece, they give you the option of sharing it online or saving it on your hard disk.

I am impressed with Fotojet.com, and it would be an easy way to make simple adjustments to an image using several of the essential online tools. It can also design a card or collage without a sweat.

Let me talk about few negative points I encountered. I had a problem running it on my latest version of Firefox despite enabling flash. I am not sure what was the cause for that. It worked perfectly under Google Chrome. Adobe Flash software in the present era should be avoided as there are several security worries for the use of flash. I would love to see fotojet shifting to the much more robust engine like HTML5 leaving back the flash.

Paid version called FotoJet Plus ($34.99/year) will get you following Exclusive Benefits: You can access the advanced editing tools, custom size, save/load project features. There will be 600+ Premium Templates, 500+ Premium Resources, Premium clipart images, fonts, effects, overlays and frames make your creations stand out from the crowd. You get faster responses from the support team. It will also be Ad Free, so can now edit in a larger canvas without distractions.

You should check it out and see what you think. www.fotojet.com

  1. Thank you very much for this post. I don’t have a good photo editor on my new laptop, other than Paint. This is simple tool to do basic photo editing. I will try this.

    Have a nice time ahead.
